Cougars Win 7 Straight, Milestones Reached
Cougars go streaking, reach milestones in an incredible late-season run
By Luke Clevenger
When the Cougars hit pause for their winter break, the team was at a crucial juncture. They were sitting at a pedestrian 11-9-0-1 record, having let a few too many winnable games fall through their hands. With a nearly month and a half break in games, it was time for the boys to re-adjust, hunker down, and make a push in the last part of the season. Oh how things change…
The Cougars came back with all lines clicking, quickly reeling in 5 straight victories for the team when the season resumed, bringing their total win streak up to 7 games. During that span of 7 games, the Cougars took down Northern Illinois University, Maryville University, Louisville University, & MACHA rival Iowa State University to improve their overall record on the season to 16-9-1. Coach Nick Edwards points to the “Buy-in” he sees in the team, and it’s not hard to see. Players laying their bodies out in front of shots, lines clicking and chemistry being found at a great pace, scoring coming from across the board, and a phenomenal sense of player morale can be felt and seen around the rink and around the team itself. It’s exactly what the team needs heading into the MACHA playoffs on the 15th.
Of course during a phenomenal run like this, many players have reached some phenomenal milestones. During the streak, Alec Pellegrino hit 100 college points; not to be outdone, Nick Edwards hit the incredible milestone as well. Scoring has been coming from all over the board, but that doesn’t mean that the usual suspects are lacking in scoring either. Andrew Bond, the team leader in scoring with 28 goals and 19 assists, has netted a hat trick in each of the last 4 weekend series.
The Cougars face a tough D1 Arkansas team this coming weekend in a non-playoff exhibition match. Following that, The SIUE Cougars will be in action in the MACHA playoffs the following weekend, beginning with a February 15th matchup against the university of Iowa, a team the Cougars are .500 against this season with a 9-7 victory and a 5-4 defeat. The games will be played in Springfield, IL at the Nelson Center Ice Arena
