Cougars Headed to Playoffs
The SIUe D-II Cougars Hockey team is headed to the MACHA Gold playoffs after a weekend sweep of the University of Iowa. The Cougars defeated their MACHA rival Hawkeyes 9-3 on Friday and 7-3 on Saturday to finish out the regular season with an overall league record of 12-15-1. SIUe was also 12-5-1 in conference play which places them 4th in the MACHA Gold standings. The weekend series against Iowa saw SIUe's offense come to life as Captain Andrew Bond (St. Louis Jr Bues, NA3HL) scored 6 goals and Senior Forward Brian Pickert (Lane Central, HS) had 3. The Cougars other scorers consisted of Kain Henson (Alton, HS), Alec Pellegrino (Michigan Warriors, NAHL), Jake Aurelio (Affton Americans, CSDHL), Stephen Sitze (Eastern Illinois University, ACHA D-II), Lucas Tucker (Edwardsville, HS) and Joe Watson (Bethalto, HS). Goalie Justin Nosser (Edwardsville, HS) started both games for SIUe and earned 2 wins.
The D-II Cougars started the regular season on the right foot before getting hit with tough injuries to veterans Tyler Gilleland (Islanders, USPHL) who missed 8 games, Nick Edwards (Belleville, HS) 11 games, and Jason Sperry (Collinsville, HS) 14 games. Injuries to 3 key players as well as a difficult stretch in the middle of the season tested the Cougars character but as they begin to get healthy and come together as a group they started to persevere. The Cougars are coming into the playoffs hot as they went 4-1-1 this spring semester.
The MACHA Gold Playoffs will be hosted this year by Saint Louis University at the Webster Grooves Ice Arena the weekend of the 9th, 10th, and 11th of February. The top 6 teams, of the 10 teams that compete in the MACHA Gold Division, make the playoffs with the 1st and 2nd seeds earning a by into the semi final games on Saturday.
